Movie Plot
Top Gun starred such big names as Val Kilmer who played Iceman, Anthony Edwards as Goose and Meg Ryan as Goose’s wife. Tom Cruise plays Maverick, an arrogant young student at a United States flight school where he, Goose, and Iceman among others are studying to be fighter pilots. Maverick and Goose are good friends from a prior assignment on the Navy’s USS Enterprise where they were both chosen to attend Top Gun, a school for training exceptional fighter pilots. Kelly McGillis plays the beautiful Charlie, one of the flight instructors who Maverick wastes no time romancing. Although most consider Maverick’s flying methods reckless they also admire them. Maverick is following in the footsteps of his father who was a naval aviator whose plane was shot down in the Vietnam War. The movie was based on an article named Top Guns that was featured in the 1983 issue of California Magazine based on pilots at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego.
Memorable Scenes
There are many stand out scenes in the movie. One memorable scene takes place in a bar at the beginning of the film. Maverick gets a group of other pilots to help him serenade a woman that has turned down his advances. They sing, “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling” by the Righteous Brothers. It’s a very romantic scene that probably every woman in the audience was wishing would happen to them. The funny part is that he finds out the next day that the woman he sang to is one of his Top Gun flight instructors, Charlie. A couple other famous songs that came from the movie are “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins, “Great Balls of Fire” by Jerry Lee Lewis and “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin which was the song for the love scene. Another heart wrenching moment is at the end of the movie, when during a training exercise Maverick’s reckless methods of flying cause an accident. Both he and Goose have to eject from their aircraft, and Goose is killed in the process. He eventually finishes up a successful mission and chooses to become an instructor at Top Gun. The movie is filled with action, romance and drama and will always be a memorable one for those who saw it in the 80′s.
